"The Eagle has landed" one of my all time favourite war movies (and books) is 100% true after all... After so much wanting this to be a 'based on fact' story for so long I'm pleased to announce that on the strength of this book cover I consider this irrefutable proof that it is in fact a true story and Jack Higgins had inside information all along.
... at least I'm 40% sure.
I lived and worked in Norfolk in the late 80's & early 90's.
Jack extended version of the Eagle Has Landed, provided extra details about landmarks, places & events.
A few friends & I searched numerous churchyards in Northern Norfolk for a german headstone; while we never found it, we talked to one elderly vicar who said it was a fool's errand to search for it, but recommended a church yard to visit. It was terribly overgrown, but we never did find it. However, there were bullet holes inside and outside the church. Being military, we knew what bullet holes in brickwork looks like.
Can't remember the church location, it was a small village between Holt & Cromer. Bessingham Manor could have been where "Churchill" stayed. I recently returned to visit Norfolk as I now live in Florida, spending several days driving from church to church. Never did find it...
